Reaction To Of Mice And Man Essays - English-language Films
Reaction to Of Mice and Man The book that I have read that has really stayed with me is Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. I really enjoyed reading it which is unusual because I usualy don't enjoy reading to much. There was something about George and Lennie's friendship that really made me think. Seeing how they were and how they shared life was really intresting. George didn't have to bother with Lennie, he could have abandoned him and gone on his own way. But he did not do that, he stayed with Lennie watching over him almost like a parent to a child. Even though Lennie always got Georege in trouble, George never stoped loving him and always stood by him. The friendship they shared went beyond what was transparent they each shared a dream and both knew they ment the world to each other. I felt that if these totaly different people could get along and look out for each other, why can't we get along with people who are different than us. They made me realize that I could learn something from how to treat people who are differnt than me. What I also liked about it was the way they never stopped trying to reach their dream. This made me think that if they could work hard for there dream why can't I. It showed me that it does not matter were you come from or what you do, it is okay to dream and work as hard as you can to reach it. For all it shows for friendship and loyalty it also shows how sometimes you have to do things you never thought you would do. For example in the end when George is forced to shoot Lennie in the head you would never have thought he would do that, but you can see that under the circumstances he had no other choice. He only had two choices let the other people get to him first and watch them torture Lennie while he died a long horrible death or do it himself and get it over quick were Lennie did not know what hit him. This is also true in life, many times we are faced with tuff choices and even though they may be the hardest you will have to go through, you know that that is the only way. You come to the realization that everything you thought you was about, can all change with a blink of the eye.

Offshore Outsourcing Essays
Offshore Outsourcing Essays Offshore Outsourcing Essay Offshore Outsourcing Essay The American Electronics Associations reports that 560,000 IT Jobs were lost in calendar year 2001 and 2002, roughly 10 of the total Information Technology work force and the numbers are growing. More overly, 30 of all new Information Technology work for U. S. Companies is now done abroad, mostly in India. In the U. S. , the average salary is around 50,000 for an average Information Technology worker, though overseas its very different. Conversely, the salary of an Information Technology worker in India is a fraction of the cost and triple revenue. As a result many small and mid-sized companies alike are sending their Information Technology work offshore, so that they can reduce operating costs. Statement of the Problem This study explores Offshore IT Outsourcing by U. S. Companies. Within the study, information will be provided on the details of Offshore IT Outsourcing including the advantages and disadvantages. It also evaluates different strategies for offshore Information Technology Outsourcing that could benefit both U. S. Employees and employers. This study utilized qualitative information provided by a number of agencies that monitor and track on the performance of Offshore Outsourcing. Within this study, library resources include electronic and computer database searches. As we move toward a purely global economy, many U. S. Companies look for opportunities to gain a competitive edge. Offshore Outsourcing appears to be the answer. Offshore outsourcing is the consumed. Executives of many U. S. Reparations feel that the only way they can remain competitive is to rapidly reduce their operating costs thereby increasing their profit margins. Finding cheaper sources of labor is one way to reduce operating costs. Unfortunately, these sources usually reside outside of the United States. Offshore Outsourcing is no longer the wave of the future it is the current direction most businesses in virtually every industry are focused. While companies are rewarded for reducing their costs, it has resulted in the displacement of a large percentage of U. S. Technical workers, skilled and with specialized training. Main Research Question The main research question is What is The Impact of Outsourcing Information Technology Information Technology Offshore Sub-Research Questions The sub-questions are What is Information Technology Offshore Outsourcing What are the advantages and disadvantages of using Information Technology Offshore Outsourcing How can employees and employers benefit from Information Technology Offshore Outsourcing Significance of the Study This study is important due to the following implications of the American economy Economic Implications, which include Increase in unemployment and underemployment rates and as a exult of displaced employees. Reduction in domestic investment because work is sent to other countries. Ultimate dependency on other countries to provide highly skilled technical resources. Political Implications, which include Unemployment is a major political issue. Politicians often use this issue for re-election purposes. Many politicians are afraid that they will be voted out if they support sending Jobs offshore. Party Politics Debating The issue of party politics is ongoing. The two major parties (Republicans Democrats) are heavily debating over who cares the least about the employed and underemployed. Social Implications, which include Reduction in the need for local technical expertise. Students will be diverted from these areas of education resulting in a lack of knowledge and advancement in education in the information technology field. Increase in the number of corporations leaders that show more interest in the bottom line versus the welfare of their employees. The content of this study will address the advantages and disadvantages of offshore Information Technology Outsourcing and the impact it is having on our economy and the workforce. Research Design and Methodology This study utilized qualitative information provided by a number of internet Journal articles that report on other studies that monitor and track the performance of Offshore Outsourcing. Within this study, library resources include electronic and computer database searches. The mission of this research project is to inform others on the activities and use of Offshore Information Technology Outsourcing. Understanding should be gained from the answers of the three sub-questions related to the main research question on Offshore Information Technology Outsourcing. Resources such as reading existing literature, work experiences, and economical and global perspectives allowed the researcher to form a personal perspective, conclusion, and recommend solutions. A number of recent articles were referenced to provide information on how offshore outsourcing is being conducted by businesses across the United States. Results from other studies on offshore outsourcing were reviewed to understand the feedback of companies. Lastly, personal experience in working with Offshore Outsourcing team was relied upon to support the results collected from literature reviews. Offshore Outsourcing is no longer the wave of the future it is the current direction most businesses in virtually every industry are focused. Many companies using offshore outsourcing have reported that they have experienced at least a 30 to 40 cost savings as a direct result of offshore outsourcing. When offshore outsourcing first became a trend, it resulted in the displacement of a large percentage of U. S. Workers, skilled and unskilled. As offshore outsourcing evolves, leaders of organizations are learning to leverage their offshore resources while transitioning their current employees to work on corporate opportunities in the business strategy that concentrates on market growth. Corporations use offshore companies to perform tasks that have been refined onshore, and they try to redirect their freed up staff toward new targeted areas. As a result corporations profits intention to rise without a reduction of workforce. This has shown to help companies to grow tremendously as they find ways to uncover new opportunities that allow them to expand into different markets. The phrase used to describe this use of offshore resources is termed transformational outsourcing. Many executives are discovering how offshore outsourcing can be focused on corporate growth, finding better ways to use skilled U. S. Staff, and creating new Jobs in the U. S. , not Just cheap wages in other countries. One executive stated, True, the labor savings from global rouging can still be substantial. But its peanuts compared to the enormous gains in efficiency, productivity, quality, and revenues that can be achieved by fully leveraging offshore talent. One example in the use of transformational outsourcing is the organization, Chapman. The company turned around its dying businesses and accelerated its pace of innovation by using offshore resources to reduce cost and applying those cost savings to fund development projects that otherwise would have been unaffordable. As part of its turnaround strategy, the president of engineering revives shifted some design work to its 160-engineer center in Achaean, India. By having U. S. ND Indian designers collaborate 24 hours a day / and 7 days a week, they projected that they would slash development costs and time and win orders often missed due to engineering constraints. This article provided examples on how transformational outsourcing works very well in every industry with exception of Information Technology offshore outsourcing. The reason is probably because when Information Technology offshore outsourcing is implemented, in most cases it completely replaces all functions that are performed by U. S. Information Technology Staff and moves the processes, staff and environments offshore. It is similar to buying a complete Information Technology solution with integration only between the offshore service provider and the business customer. The type of Information Technology work sent offshore includes, but is not limited to network and security administration, application development and implementation and helpless purport and research and development of software products. Countries that are renowned for having inexpensive technical specialties in these areas are India, and most recently the Philippines and China. These countries state that they have the worlds highest technically skilled human resource base. What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of using Offshore Information Technology Outsourcing While opposing sides of Information Technology Offshore Outsourcing debate on lower operating costs experienced by company owners versus unemployment experienced y their employees, there are other major pros and cons as detailed in the next sections. Advantages of using Offshore Information Technology Outsourcing Overseas Innovation The Faux Study put on by Duke University in collaboration with consulting firm Bozo Allen Hamilton contained results from a survey of 537 companies in the U. S. And Europe. The study key finding was that one of the major reasons for offspring Information Technology is due to the difficulty in finding tech talent in the United States. The 2004 survey showed results of less than 40 percent of Impasses cited access to qualified personnel and the number increased to 70 percent in 2005. It is believed that the reduction in technical talent is a result of the sharp cut in temporary work visas and declining enrollments in U. S. Science and engineering programs, especially at the masters and doctorate levels. The issue no longer is cost but availability of talent. The data is very clear on this, stated Rare Lenin, a Duke Business professor who led the Faux study. A significant talent gap has risen between 1995 and 2006, and thats a problem for companies that depend on engineering talent. 4 Hours a day and 7 Days a Week Access Multinationals corporations that need operations going 24 hours a day and 7 days a week have found it advantageous for strategic reasons to outsource offshore. They have found that by sending Information Technology Development offshore they can shrink product-development times by working 2417 using tech centers around the world. They have also found that it is easier to provide 2417 helpless support. Refocus Employees on Core Competencies of the Organization Technical Managers have reported that they feel there are more than enough technical opportunities in the United States and that many of the companies mainly are going abroad to free up their employees to work on the organizations core competencies. They conclude that there is a major qualitative difference between technologist in the U. S. And in developing nations. Consequently, they are sending routine work offshore and freeing up their employees to work on such things as research, conceptual design, customer interactions, or business analysis. Disadvantages of using Offshore Information Technology Outsourcing Breaches in Mallard Security Mark Willoughby, tutor of the Hidden Mallard in Offshore Products Raises Concerns says that currently, the United States National Security Agency is spending millions of dollars to have potential mallard code that has been developed offshore in a global software marketplace thoroughly regulated. By definition, mallard code is similar to a virus that has been hidden within layers of modules and complex applications for the purpose of creating backdoor to other more sensitive data Mallard is a problem that the offshore outsourcing companies are facing with the software that is coming o America. According to Willoughby in 2003, the threat of hidden Trojan horses and back doors surfaced when the government of the U. S. Announced plans to strengthen national security policies covering information processed by applications written in the global software marketplace The National Security Agencys information assurance director, Daniel Wolf, in testimony before the House Select Committee on Homeland Security cyber security subcommittee, called for a federal lab that would find malicious software routines that are designed to morph and burrow into critical applications Mallard is interlinked with outsourcing, because of their products produced are sometimes are infected by these viruses when they enter into the U. S. Borders and that is definitely a disadvantage. The United States needs to seriously re-evaluate the laws around offshore outsourcing. Other countries have placed limits around the use of offshore outsourcing. For instance, the State Council of the Peoples Republic of China in August of 2003 directed all government ministries to buy only Chinese software in the next upgrade cycle in an effort to not only encourage the development of local software companies but also to protect sensitive government data China should serve as an example for the United States to tighten limits around offshore outsourcing to improve its economy and strengthen national security. Breaches in Data Privacy In addition to breaches in security that result from mallard, privacy of data is also at risk. Earlier this year, a report circled the globe concerning confidential customer data that had been stolen and used to conduct fraud. Police in Bangor, India, reported the arrest of the chief suspect in the theft f funds from a score of customers of HISS bank in the I-J. The suspect is being charged in India with stealing customer data that was sent to his accomplices in the I-J. As a result funds were withdrawn from customers HISS bank accounts. It was later learned that a proper background check before allowing the suspect to access customer data was not performed. Standards of privacy are often neglected in countries like India because its a close-knit society where, say, reading someone else e-mail wouldnt be considered much of an invasion. In 2005, police in India

Review of the movie Outbreak 1995 Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Of the Outbreak 1995 - Movie Review Example This paper will highlight the manner in which the movie is linked to biology, as well as how the virus and antibiotic is carried by the monkey. The new strain of the Motaba virus was caused by a white-headed capuchin monkey that had been stolen from Biotest animal holding facility by one of the employees, James ââ¬ËJimboââ¬â¢ Scott. Jimbo stole the monkey with hopes of selling it in the black market; however, after failing to sell the monkey he releases it into the jungle (Petersen). Despite releasing it, he is already infected with the virus, and so is the pet store owner whom he wanted to sell the monkey to. He also infects his girlfriend when they kiss. The virus spreads so fast after mutating into a strain capable of spreading like influenza. For instance, several people get infected in the cinema hall after an infected person sneezes into the air (Petersen). It is because of its mutation that the antidote previously prepared cannot be effective to the already infected people. In this regard, the biological nature of the whole situation came into play since the host animal had to be found in order to create an eff ective serum to remedy the situation. In conclusion, Outbreak raises several questions as to what the government would do in case something of the sort happens. Consequently, concerns are raised whether CDC has plans to contain any contagion in case any outbreak occurs. The film combines medical detective work, marital and professional jealousy, military conspiracy, as well as action to create one gripping story

Communication in Economics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 2
Communication in Economics - Essay Example Paul Krugman, a Nobel Prize winning economist argues that the move to raise the minimum wage would not lead to job loss because big companies like McDonalds cannot replace workers by machines nor move these jobs overseas. However, the implications may not be the same for small companies. According to the U.S Department of Labor, raising the minimum wage can be beneficial to the economy, for instance, it would reduce employee turnover and increase consumer purchasing power. Increasing the minimum wage may be beneficial to those who receive it even though this might have little impact on the U.S economy. Therefore, it is prudent to review critically the move by L.A to increase the minimum wage from a socio-political dimension rather than an economical point of view. It is high time that the electorate figure out the motive of many elected officers as that of garnering votes rather than boosting the

300 â⬠a Gender Analysis Essay
Gender The film industry has created the conventional gender roles of society into their movies; A majority of films have supported some of the male and female stereotypes. In the history of the film industry, the role of men is primarilythat of the stereotypical working class man or hero, while the roles of women are primarily portrayed as being somewhat inferior to men. In the 1930s through the 1970s, men held the leading roles in films while women played smaller roles. Men were typically employed, successful gentlemen, while the womanââ¬â¢s only job was a housewife. The film industry was mostly dominated by men. In terms of jobs, women were given mostly family roles and rarely were shown outside of their homes, while men had successful careers and did many activities outside of home. ââ¬Å"Women were shown doing housework and men were the beneficiaries of their workâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Womenââ¬â¢s roles in the film industryâ⬠Women in film). As women were given a more active role in society, the gender roles in movies changed. However, many types of gender stereotypes in films still exist. Action genre movies in particular account for many of the gender stereotypes in the film industry today. Men are typically portrayed to be the hero, while women are often portrayed as sexual objects. In the movie 300, the Spartan men served and protected the city of Sparta, while the Spartan women did domestic chores and bred more warriors. Because this movie was set back in 480 BC society portrayed men to be superior to women. Some of the main characters in 300 are prime examples for the different gender roles. King Leonidas is the proud, triumphant King of Sparta. In the film, the character Leonidas possesed as a couple different male stereotypes. King Leonidas is portrayed as the hero throughout the different action sequences. Throughout the movie Leonidas takes charge of his troops and leads them into battle. Leonidas is hero not only because he is the King of Sparta, but also because he is the commander of the troops. Before King Leonidas leaves for battle with his three-hundred Spartans, he confronts his wife and refrains from saying ââ¬Å"My queen, my life, my love,â⬠because he, like all other Spartans, is not soft and does not want to show emotion to his queen (Zack Snyder. 00). The narrator speaks of how Spartan men are raised like brutes and are ââ¬Å"hard warriorsâ⬠(Zack Snyder. 300). This particular phrase is important to the story because it reflects the gender role of men during that time period. King Leonidas can also be classified as the family man stereotype. Throughout the film he trains his young son for battle. He plays the role of protector not only for his individual family, but also for Spart a. In the movie 300, King Leonidas represents many male stereotypes. In contrast, the character Queen Gorgo stands for many female stereotypes in the movie. The queen portrays the domestic female stereotype. In the film Queen Gorgo cares for her young son and stays at home while her husband, King Leonidas, is fighting for their country. Like many of the women in the film, Queen Gorgo performs many domestic tasks such as retrieving food and water for her family, as well as looking after her child. Queen Gorgo is also a sex object. She is easily seduced by her King. She bribesone of the councilmen with sex. At times in the film the Queen, among many other women, wear little clothing. The 300 Spartans also wear little clothing in the film. Due to the lack of clothing, the Spartans show their ripped and brute physique to reinforce the male stereotype of being brawny and strong. Lastly, the queen represents the female stereotype of beauty. The queen is an attractive woman with a small frame, much like how the media portrays what a woman should look like. Her attractive looks and sexual qualities are a large part of Queen Gorgoââ¬â¢s character. Queen Gorgo represents an abundance of the female stereotypes in society. The captain of the Spartan troops also shows male stereotypes. The captain is a close ally of King Leonidas. Throughout the film, the captain portrays the male stereotype of being a family man. The captainââ¬â¢s son, Astinos, is barely old enough to be in battle with the Persians. The captain is skeptical of allowing his son to enter battle, but decides to encourage him to serve their country. Throughout the different battles with the Persians, the captain protects his son from harm. When Astinos is killed by Persians, the captain goes on an extremely violent tirade and kills every Persian in sight due to his overpowering vengeance. After the death of his son, the captain proclaims to the king that his heart is filled with hate, and King Leonidas replies ââ¬Å"Good. â⬠King Leonidas feels that it is necessary for a soldier to feel hatred toward his enemies. This particular scene portrays another male characteristic of not showing emotion towards a certain subject. The captain is another character that shows the male stereotype present in this film. Although many of the characters in the movie portray the prevalent male and female stereotypes in society, there are a few characters that stray away from these social formalities. Councilman Theron is an example of one of the characters that does not abide to the brute and warrior stereotypes in the film 300. Theron is no older than the Spartan men who fight for their city, but he lacks the physical strength that the Spartan warriors possess. Because Theron is not a typical man in Sparta, he wears a gown that is similar to the gowns worn by Spartan women. Along with Councilman Theron, there are other men that are on the council of Sparta. These men are far less in physical size than the Spartan warrior and are given duties that are similar to women. The men in the council are unique to the majority of men in Sparta that serve their city. Since the men wear ââ¬Å"woman-likeâ⬠clothing, it labels womenââ¬â¢s apparel to be very revealing. These men reinforce some of the women stereotypes prevalent in the film. There are also some specific scenes in the movie that break some of the male and female stereotypes. Directly after Astinos is killed in battle, the Captain begins to break down and cry. The captain immediately showed his emotion for the loss of his son. This scene in the movie shows how even the most masculine man has to show some emotion at some point in time. In the end of the battle against the Persians, after King Leonidas has been shot by many arrows, he stands up and shouts, ââ¬Å"My queen, my life, my loveâ⬠(Zack Snyder. 300). This phrase is contradictory to the general actions of Spartans, and men in general, because it shows emotion. Both of these sequences in the film show how every man must show emotion, regardless of who they are. 300 demonstrated the many male and female stereotypes in society. Although most of the men were relatively similar, there were a few men in Sparta who went against the normal gender role. Like many other action movies, 300 showed various roles that supported some of the gender roles in the film industry. The main characters primarily demonstrated the conventional gender roles, but they also expressed some contradictory qualities. The film industry provides arious different types of gender roles through movies. ââ¬Å"advertising. â⬠Home | Saint Maryââ¬â¢s College, Notre Dame, IN. 20 Apr. 2009 ;lt; http://www. diigo. com/05lfx ââ¬Å"Women in Film. â⬠Yahoo! The Family Is an Ideological Construction That Perpetuates Patriarchy. Discuss.
The family is a repressive and ideological construction that perpetuates patriarchy. Discuss. Families could be described as one of the most basic forms of social organisation. Look almost anywhere in the world and you will find some form of family unit. This has happened arguably through reproduction, humans have drives and sexual needs which result in the creation of a new life, which to begin with, is completely helpless and dependant for a long period of time. The family is almost universal; the only exception to this would be communes. Functionalists agree that the family is a primary social organisation and that it does serve the purpose of integrating further generations into society with cultural values and norms. Functionalists believe that the family carry out the role of socialisation, which is the backbone of most societies. This leads to an efficient economy and social order. Functionalists say that the family satisfies the basic physical and emotional needs of humans. Murdock (1949) claimed that the family performs four basic functions in all societies; sexual, reproductive, educational, and economic. He believed that no other institution matches the efficiency of the nuclear family and therefore contributes to its universality. Talcott Parsons argued that primary socialisation of children and the stabilization of the adult personalities were common to the family in all societies, not just American. There are criticisms of the functionalists view on the family. Functionalism ignores alternative family structures, and ignores functional alternatives to the family. Further to this Marxist, Feminists, and Post Modern Sociologists do not accept that the family performs particular functions on its own in isolation of other institutions. Marxists say that the family is a major prop for the capitalist economy. They believe that women reproduce future generations of workers alongside providing unpaid domestic labour. Women are very much seen as servants to capitalism. Traditionally they stay at home and encourage children to study and enter employment. Further to this families are the central units of consumption in modern societies. We buy houses, cars, material possessions, and holidays. Zaretsky (1976) argues that in modern capitalist society the family creates the illusion that the private life of the family can be separated from other aspects of life like economy. He believed that the family cannot provide for the psychological and personal needs of individuals. It cushions the effects of capitalism on individuals while perpetuating the system. However this cannot compensate for the general alienation and lack of fulfilment produced by capitalism. Modern Marxist accounts of the family emphasise not only its structural features, but also its function in socialising children into the ideology of society. Marxists believe that this is simply a way of continuing the narrow standards of capitalism. Where functionalists like Murdock and Parsons see this socialisation process in the family as a healthy adjustment to the surrounding social relationships, the Marxist tends to see it as the manipulation of the childââ¬â¢s personality to ensure that it remains in line with the social and economic system. The family is both the institutional and psychological model for social organisation associated with an unequal distribution of wealth and power and the domination of one section of society by another. Marxism offers an explanation for the exploitation of women by men. This is that the family affords opportunities for men to compensate for their real lack of power in capitalist society by exercising domination over their households and their female partners. The role of the male in the family disguises the exploitative nature of the economic system as a whole. Marxists recognise the exploitation of women in marriage and family life but emphasises the relationship between capitalism and the family rather than the familyââ¬â¢s effect on women. Feminism stresses the exploitation of women as a key feature of family life. Feminism has had the most influence on the study of the family since the 1960ââ¬â¢s. They are highly critical of the family and emphasize the harmful effects of family life upon women. It is argued that through the production of labour power the family produces and rears cheap labour at minimal costs to capitalists, as well as acting as an emotional support, absorbing frustrations of working in the capitalist system, therefore reducing the revolutionary potential. Radical feminists describe the family as an economic system characterised by the domination and exploitation of women by men. It typically features a male head of household who has ultimate control of family resources and is the final decision-maker. Women assume by far the greater responsibility for household tasks as unpaid labourers, provide sexual services for the head of household and bear and rear his children. In addition, they assume the overwhelming share of tasks like caring for old and disabled family members. The contributions made by women to family life are thus far greater than those made by men. Even where the woman happens to be the ââ¬Ëbreadwinnerââ¬â¢ she bears a disproportionate burden of housekeeping and is responsible for providing emotional support to the male head of the family. There is a good deal of common ground among feminists, though the ideology is characterised by disagreement, but most feminists agree that sexual inequality is not simply natural, it is also highly political. Female oppression operates in all walks of life, including conditioning in the family, the result of stereotyping. So the traditional divide between ââ¬Ëpublic man' and ââ¬Ëprivate woman' is unacceptable. Gender is a significant social aspect, like class, race or religion. It is caused by patriarchy, the dominance of men over women in a relationship of power. The dominance of men in the family symbolises male supremacy in all other institutions. Sex and gender should not be confused. Biologically, only women can be mothers, but they donââ¬â¢t have to accept the responsibilities of motherhood ââ¬â nurturing, educating and raising children by devoting themselves to home and family. Sex refers to unavoidable biological differences; gender, on the other hand, is a cultural term and refers to the different roles that society gives to men and women. The overall goal of feminism is the overthrow of patriarchy and the ending of sexist oppression. Liberal feminists place the emphasis upon legal and political equality for women. They have pursued an equal rights agenda, and generally in a very pragmatic way. They want women to be able to compete on equal terms with men in every area of public life; there is no question of women being superior or entitled to favourable treatment. Hence the stress is on female emancipation, equal rights and opportunities. Socialist feminists argue that these equal rights mean little unless women also enjoy social equality. This means that they address issues such as the ownership of property, the differences in pay and mployment opportunities for men and women, and the distinction between wages labour and unwaged labour for women. So ââ¬Ëdifference' is linked to patriarchy, seeing it as a manifestation of oppression and subordination. Radical feminists believe ââ¬Ëthe personal is the political'. They are primarily concerned with equality in family and personal life. Equality must therefore operate with respect to childcare and other domestic responsibilities, as well as with respect to control of one's own body, and individual sexual expression and fulfilment. The stress is more on difference than on equality ââ¬â the very idea of equality is misguided since it implies that women would then be ââ¬Ëmale identified' in that they define their goals in terms of what men are or what men have. Women should instead recognise and celebrate the distinctive features of the female sex; the stress is on women's liberation. Clearly, if feminists wish to make permanent long-term changes with respect to the position of women in this society they face the challenge of creating new values with respect to gender and passing these values on to their children. But it is not so clear what the values are that feminists would wish to pass on to their children. An easy answer would be to say general ideas of gender equality. But the deeper we probe, the more complex this issue becomes. What are the specific values that feminists wish to pass on to their children about the structure of the family? Are feminists willing to say that the enemy is patriarchy? And if so, what exactly does this mean, both as a theoretical and a practical matter? The word ââ¬Å"familyâ⬠covers such a broad spectrum of different things, and is victim to cultural relativity. I would say that the nuclear family was definitely an ideological construction. Ann Oakley (1982) said that the conventional family is nuclear families composed of legally married couples, voluntarily choosing the parent hood of one or more children. I think Oakleyââ¬â¢s idea of the family is very ideological. Leach (1967) called this the ââ¬Å"cereal packetâ⬠image of the family. Advertisers cling mercilessly to family imagery for selling all kinds of products. The constant use of women in adverts for cleaning products is a good example of repression. Adverts often show fathers coming home from work to a beautiful wife, immaculate home, well behaved children, and a hearty meal on the table. I think this view is archaic in many senses, but also rings very true in millions of households today. Some women aspire to this dream; we all know that life isnââ¬â¢t quite like the adverts, the problem being that we donââ¬â¢t find that out till afterwards! The family is to some extent a repressive and ideological construction, but as long as there is male dominance in other social institutions, this will continue. I would say that the family isnââ¬â¢t as repressive today as it once was. In most modern societies, women can have children and have a career, although this is still somewhat of a blurry area with negative stigma. Further to this there has been a sharp rise in the number of single parent families, which are predominantly headed by women. I do believe the family is ideological; it canââ¬â¢t always be as clear cut because people face different personal circumstances. Households will continue to be male dominated for hundreds of years to come, men are seen as more economically valuable than women, and this can be seen in salary differences. Until the world and media extinguish the onslaught of family propaganda through the media, our children, and perhaps even our childrenââ¬â¢s children will grow up with the notion of a patriarchal society.
